Theme.

2020 AND BEYOND.

The theme of our inaugural Australian Coatings Show 2019 conference, hosted by the Surface Coatings Association Australia, is “2020 and Beyond… Focus for the Future”.

The purpose behind this theme is to help each of us reflect on how we view the future and do we look toward it?

As an industry we must look to the future – by doing so we can participate in it without being left behind. The theme underpins the message in our call for papers – how can we as individuals, and organisations, help our industry to look to the future clearly and with understanding that we can, like a lens, focus collectively on a single common goal – a sustainable, driven, innovative and focused Coatings Industry in the Australian, and global, context – one that leads rather than follows.

THINGS TO DO IN MELBOURNE IN SEPTEMBER

Operating since the 1870s, the Queen Victoria Market is one of Melbourne’s biggest landmarks and is a paradise for shoppers. Always thriving throughout the day, the market is home to a staggering array of shops and stalls, and you can pick up virtually almost anything at this lively and characterful meeting place.

Visit Melbourne’s regenerated Waterfront City for a day of shopping and entertainment. This sleek and modern quarter of town is home to the Harbour Town Shopping Centre, which provides much in the way of the latest fashions, luxury goods, cosmetics, household goods and more. Families and visitors with young children will enjoy the Wonderland Fun Park, home to fairground classics such as dodgems, carousels and rollercoasters.

Hop aboard the City Circle Tram for a fun and cost-effective way of taking in the city’s sights. Melbourne is famous for its extensive tram network and the City Circle operates a heritage tramcar around the central ring of the city centre and CBD, passing by sights as Federation Square, Flinders Street Station, the Docklands and Parliament House. An audio commentary provides some context to the tram’s route and history Melbourne while you whir past through the city.

Architecture aficionados should visit the magnificent Manchester Unity Building, one of the finest examples of 1930s art deco buildings the city has to offer. Originally conceived as a project to alleviate unemployment brought about by the Great Depression, nowadays visitors can join a formal 1-hour guided tour of this stunning building, which retains every inch of its former glory.

Temperatures during this time of the year are still averaging a cool 13°C (55°F) throughout the day. As a result, it is a good idea to be prepared for the chill and bring clothes that can be layered as well as a jacket. In fact, the chill can catch some people off-guard, so be sure to stay on top of the weather. Temperatures will drop to their lowest in the mornings and evenings with average low temperatures of 9°C (48°F). However, they will climb to an average high of 17°C (63°F) in the afternoon hours.

Season Spring
Average Temperatures 9°C to 17°C (48°F to 55°F)
Average Sea Temperature 13°C (55°F)
Approximate Daylight Hours 11 – 12 hours on average
Daylight Saving & Time Zone Information Victoria is GMT +10 hours
(Australian Eastern Standard Time AEST)
Typical Weather The chance of rain is still high during this time of the year. This period also tends to be the windiest time of year, so if you are visiting Melbourne in September it is often a good idea to bring appropriately protective clothing as cold South-Westerly winds accompanied by showers can hit suddenly and without warning.

Call for Papers

Our vision allows us to look to the future… and see it clearly! In optometry 2020 vision means visual acuity – you can see clearly! Do we look to the future with 2020 vision? Or is our vision short sighted – focusing on the here and now and not worrying about what the year 2020 or beyond looks like for our industry, for our young technical specialists, for our next generation of coatings professionals. What challenges will we face in 2020 and beyond?

The Australian Coatings Show 2019 Committee invites you to submit papers for consideration for the technical program of the conference relating to the idea of focusing our vision on the future, not just the here and now. Your paper could relate to new technologies, research, applications, methodologies, strategies, ideas or challenges that the industry may face in the future and must think about now.

All papers are to be prepared to the level for publication in the standard scientific journal format – commercial names etc. are strongly discouraged with the focus to be on technically relevant information and data. An abstract of the paper, together with details of the author/presenter, should be sent to the Technical committee for perusal prior to the conference. Details of the conference format and delivery of the presentation will be discussed with presenters when the final program has been set.
